Blue line privilege is real thing, but you can't be so loud and obnoxious about it, or you have to get fired to save face. Also, when the whole neighborhood is complaining to the department about your behavior and accusing the department of letting you get away with it because you are part of the gang, it is difficult to keep letting blatant violations slide while still pretending that you are a legitimate authority.
